The Barbara Stone Foundation provides services and support for families of the profoundly disabled in Greenville County.
Each year hundreds of families in our area become parents of babies with developmental difficulties, autism or cerebral palsy. Other families have loved ones who fall victim to debilitating head or spinal cord injuries from accidents on the road in the workplace or at home.
These challenges are not asked for or anticipated. They come without warning. And they do not go away…ever. The emotional and financial impact on these families is beyond words. Once the initial shock and distress subside, the long-term reality sets in. The annual cost of caring for a moderately disabled person can be greater than an average family's income.
Growing need / Shrinking funds
Recessionary times and shrinking tax revenues have caused state and federal agencies to cut funding for the disabled. Services have been slashed while the number needing these services grows persistently. At this writing, over 5,500 South Carolina families are awaiting support. By the time you read this, that number will be higher. Many families now find themselves in dire circumstances with nowhere to turn for help.
Open your mind to the need. Open your heart to the disabled.
If you have a friend or loved one with a life-long disability, you are already aware of the challenges and the degree of need. If not, just take a moment to imagine how your life would change if you or someone very close to you suddenly became permanently and profoundly disabled. It's difficult to think about---but it happens every day to people of all walks of life-- right here in Greenville County. Now imagine most of your family's time and income going towards the care of that disabled individual for the foreseeable future.
This is reality for thousands of families who are waiting for services.
The Barbara Stone Foundation raises funds to help families of the disabled get the equipment and services they need—first to survive and then to thrive. We make every effort to improve quality of life not just for the disabled individual, but for the rest of the family as well.
